When I think of design course in India, the first university that comes to my mind is NID. University is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. An autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, NID remains as the top favorite for the design students. NID is considered to be ranked among the top 50 schools in the world. Film director Bappaditya Roy and Prasoon Pandey ( Advertising Age listed him among the Top 100 advertising film directors of the world.) are the notable alumni.

IDC, IIT Bombay

During the late sixties, the Industrial design was booming as a profession, IDC (Industrial Design Centre) was set up in Bombay ( Now it’s Aamchi Mumbai 🙂 ). The first class was commenced on Jan 1st, 1970. It offers Bachelor as well as Masters program in Design. The Ph.D. program is also offered.

Pradyumna Vyas  (Faculty in the Industrial Design discipline at NID) and Shrirang Sathye (Director Animation Tata Elxsi VCL, Mumbai, India.)

Bachelor in Design (B.Des) 

IDC admits 30 students for a four year, eight semesters Bachelor of Design (B.Des) Programme and Dual Degree B.Des + M.Des program. Pearl Academy

NIFT, Delhi

NIFT was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It is an institution of design, management, and technology for the international fashion business. With its head office in New Delhi, NIFT has centers at Mumbai, Kolkata, Kangra, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Raebareli, Patna, Shillong, Bhopal, Kannur, Bhubaneswar, Srinagar, and Jodhpur.

The institute was granted statutory status in 2006, empowering it to award degrees and other academic distinctions.

Famous fashion designers such as Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Arora (Former creative director for the womenswear collection of the French fashion house Paco Rabanne.) were amongst the notable alumni.
